Correct Lamp, Ballast, & Battery Packaging Requirements LAMP Packaging: Regulation (CFR) 49, part 173.166 Unbroken lamps must be packaged in cardboard boxes or fiber drums with the openings secured to prevent breakage. Broken Lamps must be packaged in DOT specification metal or plastic drums with the lids secured. An additional service charge will be invoiced for any sorting, packaging, repackaging or cleanup of customer material. The easiest and most efficient method of packaging spent lamps for recycling is simply to put the old lamp back into the new lamp box as you replace them. Do not place the eggshell separators back in the box. Do not mix different types of lamps together. Tape the lamp box shut, with clear carton tape in case any lamps become broken it will hold the contents inside the box. Stack them on a normal shipping pallet criss-crossing every other row, no more than 66” high, and shrink wrap boxes to pallet. Each pallet should be labeled USED MERCURY LAMPS FOR RECYCLE, or UNIVERSAL WASTE MERCURY LAMPS. Do not store outside or allow boxes to get wet, badly damaged boxes, wet boxes, etc will not be accepted for transport. Approximate Lamp weights-8’=1lb, 4’=½ lb, Utube/Circular=1/2 lb, Compact=¼ lb, HID=1lb, Icad=1/4lb BALLAST Packaging: Regulation (CFR) 49, part 178.504 PCB Ballast must be shipped in DOT 17H steel drums with the lid secured. Weight restriction of 882 lbs per drum or a penalty from the U.S. Department of Transportation Department may result. Also an additional service charge will be invoiced for overweight drums. Non PCB Ballast can be packaged in steel drums or cardboard boxes. Do not mix PCB and NON PCB Ballast together or they will all be classified PCB. Leaking PCB Ballast must be double bagged and placed in a drum containing at least 3 inches of vermiculite. An additional service charge will be invoiced for any sorting, packaging, repackaging or cleanup of customer material. Each drum should be labeled PCB or NON-PCB and shall have the drum lid secured. Approximate Ballast weights- F40= 4lbs, F96=7lbs, F96HO=12 lbs, HID=25lbs BATTERY Packaging: Batteries should be stored in a cool dry place away from flammable materials and heat sources. Heavy batteries may be palletized and stretch-wrapped, smaller batteries may be packaged in DOT drums or DOT heavy cardboard boxes. Seal boxes with carton tape. Mark all containers “used batteries.” An additional service charge will be invoiced for any sorting, packaging, repackaging or cleanup of customer material. SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR BATTERIES: Certain precautions must be taken to prevent batteries from short-circuiting causing explosions and or fire! Place each rechargeable battery into an individual plastic bag or place non-conductive tape over the terminals or other metal surfaces during storage and transport. ESCRAP and COMPUTER Packaging: EScrap and Computers can be palletized and stretch-wrapped, or placed in large Gaylord pallet sized heavy wall cardboard boxes.
